The American Dream is defined in the dictionary as: a life of personal happiness and material comfort as traditionally sought by individuals in the U.S. For example, many people pursue getting money and riches, big houses and fast cars as their American Dream. Gatsby represents this dream very well. He owns a great amount of money and shows it in his large house and lavish parties that he throws on a regular basis. We believe that this novel condemns Gatsby for this view of the American Dream. Through the text it reveals how although he has all the money and luxuries he could ever want, he still seems unfulfilled. In general, we believe that the American Dream has harldy changed since Gatsy's time. The main objective still seem sto be for wealth, nice cars, big houses, and material items. It may have slightly changed with modernization and newer better things to achieve.

external image robert-redford1.jpgThe meaning of the title "The Great Gatsby" is literally that Gatsby is a great person. It portrays him as an amazing and heroic man that seems to be living the American Dream. The novel seems to take a turn at some point from the man with the perfect life, to a man that is not all he is brought up to be. It seems that F Scott Fitzgerald is almost mocking him in a way. It makes his life seem great and exciting, and that he has achieved the generic view of the American Dream, but in reality, he has not.

external image 856476198_26438e1460.jpgThe part of his past that Gatsby is trying to relive is Daisy. When Gatsby and Daisy were young and in love, Gatsby headed off to war, and had to be separated from Daisy with her word that she would wait for Gatsby to come back when the war was finished. After the war, Gatsby came to find that Daisy had moved on and married Tom and had a little girl. When Gatsby found out that Nick was related to Daisy he asked Nick to invite Daisy to Nick's house in order to reconnect with Daisy, "Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay...The modesty of the demand shook me. He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths- so that he could 'come over' some afternoon to a strangers garden" (p 78). We believe that Gatsby was unsuccessful in recapturing his past bacause although he had reconnected with her, his plan was for them to fall in love and be together again. If I could revisit anything from my life it would be when my uncle and grandpa died. They were killed in an airplane crash in the plane that my grandpa had built when the wing clipped the ground upon landing. I wish i would have been able to know them and have them as a part of my life. However, this is not possible since it was an event that took place instead of a person that i lost touch with.
